Seorang laki-laki sedang tidur di pondoknya ketika kamarnya tiba-tiba menjadi terang, dan nampaklah Sang Juruselamat. Tuhan berkata padanya bahwa ada pekerjaan yang harus dilakukannya. Lalu Tuhan menunjukkan padanya sebua batu besar di depan pondoknya. Tuhan menjelaskan bahwa ia harus mendorong batu itu dengan seluruh kekuatannya. Hal ini dikerjakan laki-laki itu setiap hari.

Bertahun- tahun ia bekerja sejak matahari terbit sampai terbenam, pundaknya sering menjadi kaku menahan dingin, ia kelelahan karena mendorong dengan seluruh kemampuannya. Setiap malam laki-laki itu kembali ke kamarnya dengan sedih dan cemas, merasa bahwa sepanjang harinya kosong dan tersia-sia.

Ketika laki-laki itu mulai putus asa, si Iblispun mulai mengambil bagian untuk mengacaukan pikirannya "Sekian lama kau telah mendorong batu itu tetapi batu itu tidak bergeming. Apa kau ingin bunuh diri? Kau tidak akan pernah bisa memindahkannnya." Lalu, ditunjukkannya pada laki-laki itu bahwa tugas itu sangat tidak masuk akal dan salah.

Pikiran tersebut kemudian membuat laki-laki itu putus asa dan patah semangat. "Mengapa aku harus bunuh diri seperti ini?" pikirnya. "Aku akan menyisihkan waktuku, dengan sedikit usaha, dan itu akan cukup baik."
